Sing the stories
|
All of the Storytime and adaptedstories materials use the story vocabulary from the stories in song format. Each story has a song to accompany it. Using story elated songs gives the teacher another opportunity to focus on and highlight story related vocabulary.
It gives the students another opportunity to practice the story vocabulary in another context or novel activity. By practicing the songs repeatedly, keeping the words simple, providing visual Cues or symbols, and slowing down the pace of the song, the low verbal and nonverbal students can actually sing parts of the song- -a rare opportunity for most low (2-3 word sentences) and nonverbal students when presented with songs they have an abundance of language associated with it. In some classrooms we have used the predictable charts as songs. Students follow along with the words and sing the chart rather than read. This is highly motivating and fun for students as they helped compose the materials! This can be an important learning time for children with disabilities-typically predictable writing charts are simple. This is a good time to focus on the words and highlight the words. Symbols associations can be used for less frequently words such as the items they are singing about. |
